OUR STORY

Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC) is one of the oldest and most trusted hospitals in the Philippines. It was founded in 1891 during the Spanish occupation in the country from charitable donations of Chinese immigrants. Backed by the Philippine Chinese Charitable Association Inc. (PCCAI), the hospital continues to grow and improve its services and commitment to the welfare of its patients.

CGHMC is a non-stock, non-profit tertiary healthcare Institution owned and operated by the PCCAI and authorized to operate as a Level IV Tertiary Hospital by the Department of Health. Sprawled on a large property along Blumentritt Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila, the hospital is a vast property consists of seven structures: the Main Building, Annex Building, Cancer Institute, Emergency Building, Medical Arts Building, Charity Pavilion, and the Chinese General Hospital Colleges.

CGHMC houses over 600 medical practitioners and 1600 paramedic, 700 hospital beds, and 100 charity beds catering to Filipinos from all walks of life. To date, the hospital is continuously upgrading its facilities with technologically advanced diagnostic medical equipment and new services to cater not only patients, but medical training and teaching as well.

OUR LEADER

Through peaks and valleys, a person’s legacy is often determined by his reputation, perseverance, and what he leaves behind for others. Dr. James G. Dy, however, isn’t done rewriting the best chapter of his life.

At age 90, Dr. Dy continues to be the guiding force behind Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC). And even during these uncertain times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital is still steadfast in its commitment in ensuring quality healthcare and state-of-the-art medical equipment for patients and clients.

A devoted family man and exceptional entrepreneur, Dr. Dy’s heart remains in helping others—particularly those who cannot afford to spend much on medicine.

People close to him have said that he’s always had a soft spot for charities and the less fortunate, most likely, because, he used to be one.

The second of nine children, the young Dy would ply the streets of Manila with his other brothers, doing odd jobs and selling everything from peanuts to cigarettes just to make ends meet. And while such an impoverished childhood might’ve broken down your average man, it only hardened his resolve to do well and inspired him to succeed.

Decades on and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In fact, he still personally checks and arranges medical teams from CGHMC to provide free consultations, treatment, and medicine to the poor in rural, urban, and coastal areas—not to mention carrying out relief operations and donations, which the hospital is well known for.

Indeed, CGHMC has always been a hospital with a heart of gold and genuine care for patients. And with Dr. James G. Dy and his living legacy at the helm, it always will be.
